A Nun Has Been Charged with Shoplifting Coffee and Snacks

Sister Agnes Pennino appears to have had a moment of weakness earlier this week.

After being tracked down by state police at her Danville, Pennsylvania convent, Pennino was charged with shoplifting, according to local news outlet WNEP. The 78-year-old nun is alleged to have stolen $23 worth of snacks, coffee, soap, and shampoo from a Surplus Outlet store near Berwick.

Employees at the store became suspicious when they were alerted by shoppers who noticed Pennino apparently stealing items.

"Another customer came to me in aisle five and said, 'I'm not sure what I'm seeing, but I think a woman is stealing,' and she had already left the store by that time and I went out to pursue her," Zane Kishbach, a manager at Surplus Outlet, told WNEP.

Though Pennino was able to leave the store before being confronted, employees were able to get her license plate number, allowing police to confirm that her car was owned by the religious sisters at Saints Cyril and Methodius Convent in Danville—which came as a big surprise to the store manager.

"I was shocked, to say the least. I was shocked. I couldn't believe it that a nun would actually do something like that," Kishbach added.

While Sister Agnes may seek forgiveness from the Lord, she will have to deal with more earthly authorities in the meantime.

The incident, which was reportedly captured on video surveillance, will be treated as a summary offense, meaning that if she pleads guilty she will be forced to pay a fine.
