No, no, it’s not another list. It’s a mixtape, the finest in innovative, future-forward sounds assembled by your pals at Motherboard. You get one track a day from now until the end of the year, and then it all comes together into the best document of the future of music seen from the year 2011 on the internet.

.08 Balaclavas, “Legs Control”

The thing about the resurgence of goth in the past year or so is that, well, a whole lot of awesome gothy things have been going pretty strong this whole time. I’m thinking of projects like ADULT., Indian Jewelry, and Chromatics, all of which seemed to resonate weirdly with the going indie music concerns at their respective peaks. Find Houston’s Balaclavas along this continuum. They put out a way under-represented LP this fall on the excellent Dull Knife label and its opener, “Legs Control,” sucks you hell-deep in about 10 seconds of driving-too-fast guitar and bass-synth. Dark rooms, running mascara, bursts of flashing lights; it’s its own kind of punk.
