The emerging and eminent names in internet art are coming to Montreal for a one-night-only party event at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Montreal, Canada (MACM). X+1 is an experimental exhibition that explores "networks, rhizomatic invitations and social environments as a way to create a new media happening," and features works from LaTurbo Avedon, to Claudia Mate, to Eva Papamargariti, Brenna Murphy, and Krist Wood in its takeover of the museum's central atrium.

The event is being organized by Erin Gee, Sabrina Ratté, Tristan Stevens, and Benoit Palop (himself a mainstay here at The Creators Project). Says Stevens, "We wanted to explore new curatorial models in order to explore networks. Adapting an institutional environment as a way to create a new happening within a museum. Montreal has a receptive enthusiastic community. There is a sense of opportunity here a depth and history of creative industries. This legacy is something we want to continue with, within the city."

The show itself takes its name from the unusual curatorial process that generated the artworks. When Gee, Ratté, Stevens, and Palop asked for submissions, their prompt read as follows: "Alongside this invite (X) we encourage you to invite a guest artist of your choice to also present work in the context of this event on the evening (+1). As a sort of antithesis to the usual curatorial process, rather than conceiving connections through a symbiosis between aesthetic and message, X + 1 is primarily highlighting the network activity and exchanges, and this translation of online relationships created are subsequently transcribed through a unique and immersive visual experience."

"Call it a mash-up," they explain.
