World's Tallest Vertical Garden Is Growing In Sri Lanka

The high-rise apartment building is a fusion between a skyscraper and a forest.

Sri Lanka will literally have roses in the air next year, as architecture firm Milroy Perera and Maga Engineering are collaborating to build a 46-floor, high-rise building that will be outfitted with the world's tallest vertical garden.

The tower, called "Clearpoint Residencies," will be covered in plants and gardens, but also focuses on being eco-friendly on the inside--containing a self-sustaining watering system, energy-efficient air conditioning, solar panelling, and more. It's designed to have a minimal carbon footprint and extremely low maintenance costs (especially for a building of its scale).

According to the architects, it will be "pioneering sustainable residences in Sri Lanka, with the aim of taking urban living forward while still maintaining a balance with nature and the surrounding environment."

The project is similar to Bosco Verticale, a building in Milan with its own vertical garden, which has 900 trees planted on the facade, equal to 10,000 square meters of forest.

"Clearpoint Residencies" is the kind of building that keeps on giving--a figuratively and literally lush spot that will fit 164 apartments with undoubtedly the best view of the surrounding area (a few miles from the center of the city, Columbo). The pollution-adverse tower is expected to be finished by late 2015.

Imagine waking up in this beauty--plucking flowers for your kitchen table could be at arm's reach, right outside your window.
