This Brainwave-Based Arcade Game Was Designed to Improve Concentration
Miyeon Kim’s ‘Link-Link’ game measures your brainwaves using an EEG biosensor headset.
The brain works a lot like a muscle; the more you use it, the stronger it becomes. This concept has spawned a number of ‘mental fitness’ companies in recent years like Luminosity, Fit Brains, and Cognifit. With this sort of platform in mind, Miyeon Kim, an MFA candidate at Parsons School of Design, has created a concentration game that helps train the brain to focus and problem solve more efficiently. To scale the 8 levels of Kim’s Link-Link arcade game, players must maintain a level of concentration in order to move a digital bridge in place so that their avatar can make it over to the end of each maze.
To play the game, participants don a Neurosky headset, an electroencephalogram (EEG) biosensor that detects electrical activity in your brain via flat metal discs pressed against your scalp. A player’s concentration is measured through tiny electrical impulses called brainwaves. The Neurosky headset detects these waves and then wirelessly communicates them to your device.
Kim created the game with hopes of improving her peers’ concentration through an intuitive game experience. “Concentration is a skill that helps in all walks of life, to study, read, work, drive, get tasks done, meditate, and for everything else. I do really think that concentration is the key to success on every level of mental activity,” Kim tells The Creators Project. Get a better look at Link-Link in action below:
