Jared Spurgeon Bats Home Absurd Baseball-Style Goal

Incredible hand-eye coordination from the Minnesota Wild defenceman.

Another day, another wacky, unorthodox batted-out-of-the-air goal scored in the NHL.

Minnesota Wild defenceman Jared Spurgeon has made a name for himself as a skilled defender with a pair of pretty soft hands. On Tuesday, he showed just how soft those hands really are in the most unconventional way imaginable.

After sneaking in from the point and finding himself unchecked in front, Spurgeon picked the rebound right out of the air, directed it toward the net calmly, and batted it straight past a bewildered Cory Schneider.

Spurgeon has 21 points with six goals this season—including five in his last 12 games— while Minnesota's red-hot power play has tallied in 11 of the past 14 contests. Despite the loss, the Wild are still sitting pretty atop the NHL standings, two points up on Anaheim for first in the Western Conference and three back of Columbus and Washington for top spot overall in the NHL.

Spurgeon has developed into a top-pair defenceman with Minnesota over the past few seasons, much more than what was expected when he was selected in the sixth round of the 2008 draft. Minnesota might have to be careful with their prized, skilled blueliner, though, or Canada's bizarre World Baseball Classic team may just come calling.
