Local Mentally Ill Man Owns The Title to Petco Park And Nobody Knows How To Get It Back

He filed the title transfer two years ago.

Two years ago, a man named Derris Devon McQuaig walked into the San Diego County Recorder's Office and transferred the deed for Petco Park, the home of the San Diego Padres, to himself. For the past two years, he has owned the deed, and nobody can get it back.

The San Diego Union-Tribune has the whole story, which you should absolutely read because it's a hilarious set of legal loopholes coinciding to leave some dude with the deed to the Padres' downtown ballpark. Normally, a property holder can get the deed back by going to court, but a psychiatrist ruled McQuaig is mentally ill and unable to stand trial. Until he is capable of doing so, nobody seems to know how the Padres can get the deed back.

This doesn't mean McQuaig owns the ballpark. In fact, it doesn't seem to affect much of anything except for the ability to sell or refinance the property, since no bank would be willing to refinance a loan if you don't hold the deed for the property. It's also not clear why McQuaig did this, as nobody interviewed by the Tribune believes he intended to profit from it or make it part of a wider scheme. However, he did spend "many hours" in the Recorder's office before filling out the deed transfer, doing research and asking questions.

No matter what comes of this, it is simply incredible that anyone could just walk into an office, fill out a form, and then have the deed to a half-billion dollar piece of property. Dare to dream, kids.
