Rays' Kiermaier Dances Beautifully Around the Tag, Is Ultimately Called Out

Kevin Kiermaier laid down some fancy footwork to avoid Chris Colabello's tag.

Ah, Opening Day. The smell of recently cut grass, the musty leather of a well-worn glove. The audacious base-running of someone looking at the game with fresh eyes. And that's how Tampa Bay Rays' Kevin Kiermaier certainly played it, with a delightful little jig around a tag that shows he's got some new moves for this season.

Oh, it looked like it was going to be a beauty alright. In the bottom of the second with two outs, Kiermaier chopped a bouncing ball that was picked up by Toronto Blue Jays first baseman Chris Colabello in the shallow infield. While in mid-sprint to first, Kiermaier stopped on a dime, throwing off Colabello's beeline to the tag, and then dodged him altogether. Kiermaier then reached out with his foot, and touched base, but as this handy slowmo will show you, Colabello beat him to it:

While the umps were reviewing the play, Kiermaier did a little reenactment for his teammates.

But ultimately, and correctly, he was called out. Keep playing the game like you've never seen it before, Kiermaier. Get it a corsage. Dance with it.
