The Baltimore Orioles released a statement today announcing that 23-year-old minor league infielder Ramon Ramirez tragically died in a motorcycle accident in the Dominican Republic on Saturday.

"As a member of the Orioles organization, Ramon worked tirelessly to make the most of his opportunity to play professional baseball," said Dan Duquette, Orioles executive vice president of baseball operations. "Our thoughts are with his family, friends, teammates and coaches as we mourn this unimaginable loss."

Recalling the death of Cardinals prospect Oscar Taveras in 2014, it's a reminder that young Latin American baseball players are particularly at risk of driving-related accidents when they return home. In a World Health Organization report from 2013, the Dominican Republic was ranked as the deadliest country in the world for motor-vehicle related death.

Ramirez signed with the Orioles in 2014 as a non-drafted free agent.
