Anthony McCall Creates Hybrid Sculptures From Light

Light in all its ethereal beauty.

There are many different materials that artists can use to sculpt with, from traditional materials like stone and marble to the more esoteric. British-born, New York-based artist Anthony McCall definitely falls into the latter category with his light sculptures, which are currently exhibiting at the show Five Minutes Of Pure Sculpture at the Hamburger Bahnhof museum in Germany.

For these ethereal sculptures, a black space is filled with fog and light to create what McCall calls “solid light sculptures.” These 3D forms that bathe the viewer in strange light are actually derived from 2D drawings of intersecting lines which are digitally projected vertically to create volumetric shapes.

These drawings are also animated very slowly so they change over time as the viewer is interacting with them. McCall describes the works as caught somewhere between sculpture and film, occupying a middle ground where the field of light from the projection is itself the artwork. The result is radiant and celestial and not unlike the effect created for Jonathan Glazer and J.Spaceman in A Physical Manifestation of Ladies and Gentlemen, We Are Floating in Space.
