Discover What Twitter Tastes Like With Tasty Tweets

A prototype machine collects tweets and builds smoothies based on what fruits are mentioned in them.

When it comes to data visualizations, we’re generally used to experiencing them through our sense of sight. But how about if instead of sight we experienced the information using taste? This is the idea behind the Tasty Tweets project from Kat Zorina, Ruben van der Vleuten, and Kostantinos Frantzis at the Copenhagen Institute of Interactive Design (CIID).

They built a prototype machine which uses the Twitter API to let users experience trends on Twitter, creating a smoothie from the mentions of different fruits like pineapple, blueberry, and apple. The machine creates the drink using the same proportions of fruits that are mentioned in the tweets, so if a certain fruit is tweeted about more at a certain time, then that will be the dominant flavor in your smoothie.

As well as taste, the way the smoothie is constructed means you also get a visual representation of the data. The layering of the different juices in the glass gives a visual form to the proportions, what they’ve called “a graph in a glass.” No word yet on whether they’re adding an additional tank for all the Spam on Twitter. See a making-of video below.
