How to Make a Magazine in Cuba

Henry Constantin Ferreiro and graphic designer Sol Garcia Basalt create this illegal bimonthly magazine out of Ferreiro’s small apartment in Camaguey, Cuba.

From the column 'Photos From Beyond'

Henry Constantin Ferreiro and graphic designer Sol Garcia Basalt create this illegal bimonthly magazine out of Ferreiro's small apartment in Camaguey, Cuba. The magazine runs articles about trying to get Cuba connected to the internet, reggaeton, poetry, literature, and other things that are not "approved" by the Cuban government.

To make it, Basalt has to drive 40 minutes to Ferreiro's house with a flash drive. They cannot communicate via the internet because the internet doesn't exist. They have to have it printed illegally, usually in runs of something like 50 or 60 copies. Ink and paper must be bought on the black market. The magazine usually spreads in PDF form on flash drives.
