The Milan police have a high-tech solution to catch robbers

A predictive computer program called KeyCrime is helping Milan’s police find relationships among serial crimes like robberies

Milan is the wealthiest city in Italy, making it a regular target for robberies and serial crimes. But the police are fighting back, and have come up with a high-tech solution to end an old-school crime wave.

KeyCrime, a computer program created by a police officer in the Milan Police Department, has revolutionized how the city catches robbers.

Since the Milan Police Department started using the program, the number of robberies in the city has fallen by 51 percent while the rate of solved cases increased to 60 percent.

VICE News met with KeyCrime’s creator, Mario Venturi, to learn how this rank-and-file police officer, with the help of some programmer friends, created a software that has changed the way Milan’s police force fights crime.
