Radiohead's 'OK Computer' Bonus Cut "I Promise" Is Here for the Stans

Consider it a soothing balm in a shit time.

What a week, lads. I thought things were bad enough when we wrote about Mike WiLL and co's "Perfect Pint" being a respite from both "covfefe" and Theresa May's personal attacks on Corbyn. But that, alas, was only the news cycle up to Wednesday morning. Since then, we've had the delights of May not only sending Amber Rudd in her place because she couldn't face a televised debate between the main UK political party leaders (and UKIP, I guess) but then sending Justine Greening to stand in for her on, er, renowned brutal site of radio political grillings and sick burns … BBC 4's Woman's Hour. Unrelated but also trash: Trump confirming the US will pull out of the UNFCC Paris agreement on climate change.

Whatever, here we are. We write often on this site about how music can be not only a way to express yourself, politically and otherwise, but an aural manifestation of *massages temples and pushes past the bullshit*. And then in came some old-ass Radiohead to soothe your pain. I'll put my hands up right now to being one of those Radiohead stans who will earnestly yell about the mellifluous nature of Thom Yorke's falsetto over a pub din and walk away thinking, 'yes, that was a good use of my time.' Here, the band's temporarily lost 1996 recording of "I Promise" shows off that vocal, bolstered by a simple strummed acoustic guitar line and strings-style synths.

The song premiered by Steve Lamacq on Radio 6Music, and will be one of three previously unreleased tracks on the band's OKNOTOK anniversary album special. The album's due out on 23 June, via XL, and is most definitely one for fellow ride or dies. As Lamacq said, a "source close to the band" (lol) told him "they were especially apparently pleased to find this in the vaults because they thought it had been lost somewhere over the years". Glad you found it guys, because the fans needed its dulcet tones this week.

UPDATE, 3.06PM BST: You can now watch the "I Promise" video on Radiohead's site but not anywhere else because they've got those Vimeo privacy settings on lock.

You can find Tshepo smashing "replay" on this on Twitter.
