Hey, There's a New Kid Cudi Song and It Samples Smashing Pumpkins

"The Rage" is Cudi's contribution to the soundtrack of 'Rampage,' a film about, uh, a massive albino gorilla.

When you woke up this morning, Kid Cudi x Smashing Pumpkins was probably not the musical connection you thought you were going to see on this grey New Music Friday, but here we are. Cudi's new track, "The Rage," presumably a loosie recorded for the soundtrack of the new film Rampage (which stars The Rock, meaning it is a 5 star, instant classic) samples Smashing Pumpkins' 1995 track "Bullet with Butterfly Wings," and it actually kinda bangs.

"The Rage" keeps the "Bullet with Butterfly Wings" chorus line ("Despite all my rage / I am still just a rat in a cage"), though it's warped to sound even more pained. Piano is also added, over which Cudi floats pretty effortlessly. Lyrically it feels equally triumphant, and like a battle cry – as if he's proud of what he's overcome but recognises he still has further to go. Inspirational stuff as we move into the weekend, thank you Kid Cudi and, uh, Billy Corgan! Listen below:
