Trump Offers Remarks at the Holocaust Memorial Museum

President Trump will speak at the Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, DC, on Tuesday in honor of a weeklong remembrance period for the millions of victims who died during WWII at the hands of the Nazi regime, USA Today reports.

Trump's speech Tuesday follows a series of major gaffes from his administration, specifically about the Holocaust, that outraged many members of the Jewish community. Back in January, Trump released a statement on International Holocaust Remembrance Day that failed to mention Jews or Judaism at all. Then, earlier this month on Passover, Sean Spicer said that Hitler "didn't even sink to using chemical weapons" during World War II at a White House press briefing, which resulted in numerous apologies. The Anti-Defamation League even responded by writing to the press secretary, offering him a basic history lesson.

To try, at least in part, to make up for its prior mistakes, Trump's administration released a proclamation on Monday urging Americans to take part in the Week of Remembrance with "appropriate study, prayers, and commemoration, and to honor the memory of the victims of the Holocaust and Nazi persecution by internalizing the lessons of this atrocity so that it is never repeated." Though, as the Hill points out, some of the wording is pretty similar to the statement on the Holocaust Museum's website.

All this comes at a time when the US has seen a major uptick in anti-Semitic acts since the election—including bomb threats and vandalized grave sites—according to new research the Anti-Defamation League released on Sunday.
