Trump's National Security Adviser Responds to Russia Intel Scandal

H.R. McMaster will hold a White House press conference at 11:30 AM.

National security adviser H.R. McMaster is scheduled to hold a press conference at the White House Tuesday following an explosive report from the Washington Post that revealed Trump had disclosed highly classified intelligence during a meeting with Russian officials.

After the report came out, McMaster—who was also in the May 10 meeting with Russia's foreign minister, Sergei Lavrov, and ambassador Sergey Kislyak—slammed the report as "false."

"At no time, were intelligent sources or methods discussed. And the president did not disclose any military operations that were not already publicly known," McMaster told reporters at the White House on Monday. "I was in the room. It didn't happen."

But on Tuesday morning, Trump weighed in on the scandal with a pair of early morning tweets, admitting that he did share "facts pertaining to terrorism and airline flight safety" in his meeting with the Russians, effectively contradicting McMaster's statement.

Now the national security adviser will have to answer questions from the media about exactly what went down in last week's meeting and how it might affect the US's relationship with intelligence allies moving forward. The Post's initial report—which has since been verified by US officials to the New York Times, Reuters, and BuzzFeed News—claimed that Trump had disclosed intel from an ally source close to ISIS related to a specific security threat. That threat was reportedly tied to the airplane laptop ban the Department of Homeland Security recently floated.

One source told the Post Trump had "revealed more information to the Russian ambassador than we have shared with our own allies." Another told BuzzFeed News that the story was "far worse than what has already been reported."
