Palmer Luckey — the 24-year-old, meme-loving, liberal-hating founder of Oculus VR — has officially left Facebook, which acquired his startup for more than $2 billion in 2014.The virtual reality entrepreneur has been in hot water for awhile now. Last September, the Daily Beast revealed Luckey had donated $10,000 to a pro-Trump organization affiliated with far-right media personality Milo Yiannopoulos, after which Luckey effectively disappeared from public view. In February, Facebook lost a lawsuit and was ordered to pay $500 million to the gaming company ZeniMax; Luckey was found to have violated a ZeniMax non-disclosure agreement. Facebook has said it’s considering an appeal.UploadVR first reported the news of Luckey’s exit from Facebook. In a statement given to VICE News, the company declined to comment on why Luckey had left.“Palmer will be dearly missed. Palmer’s legacy extends far beyond Oculus. His inventive spirit helped kickstart the modern VR revolution and helped build an industry,” the Facebook statement said. “We’re thankful for everything he did for Oculus and VR, and we wish him all the best.”Palmer’s exit comes about a year after Oculus premiered its flagship virtual reality headset, the Oculus Rift (which Luckey helped design). The company initially struggled to get Rift units to customers who had preordered them, although reviewers warmed to the device in December when the company finally shipped its long-awaited Touch controller.
