A massive oil tanker could explode after a collision along China’s coast

An Iranian tanker is still burning off China, creating fear that it will sink and cause a huge oil spill.

At least one person has been found dead after an Iranian oil tanker collided with a Chinese freighter in the East China Sea on Saturday. The ship was carrying 32 crew members and 42 million gallons of oil, and is now at risk of exploding or sinking, according to Chinese state media.

According the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, rescue teams have recovered the body of one unidentified crew member. They are also continuing a search-and-rescue mission with support from South Korea, despite difficult conditions created by the toxic fumes and bad weather hampering the effort.

The 900-foot tanker was carrying just under 1 million barrels of oil — nearly four times what was spilled during the Exxon-Valdez disaster in Alaska in 1989.
