Erykah Badu recently curated the fourth instalment of Knitting Factory’s Fela Kuti Box Set, a seven-LP compilation that digs deeper into Kuti’s astonishing music and legacy. Last night, Badu appeared was the musical guest on Fallon, performing her Baduizm classic “On and On” over Kuti’s 1977 single, “Sorrow Tears and Blood.” Backed by a horn-stacked band with Questlove on Drums, Badu was supernatural as always. She sauntered onstage without moving her eyes from the crowd, toyed with her band during pauses, and went off on vocal tangents whenever she got the chance. She played a 20-year-old song over a 40-year-old song and nothing sounded like it belonged to any time at all.
