Six Flags Is Pairing Virtual Reality Headsets With Real Rollercoasters

I suppose it was only a matter of time before this unholy union happened: Samsung has partnered with Six Flags to bring virtual reality rollercoasters to the American masses.

Thrill seekers at nine different Six Flags locations (named in the release) will be able to strap on a Samsung Gear VR headset as they board the coaster. The twists, turns, and drops of the ride will correspond to the visuals the rider receives from the headset.

Six of the rollercoasters will provide the "New Revolution" virtual reality experience, where you're a fighter pilot saving the planet from alien invasion, and the other three coasters will offer a Superman-themed ride.

In the Samsung press release, Six Flags CEO John Duffey says this joint venture will be a game-changer. "[It] represents everything our brand stands for—delivering the most thrilling and innovative rides and attractions in the world."

While this does seem like the ultimate legal adrenaline high, there might be some flies in the ointment. What happens when your headset slips off your head and conks another passenger in the face? Or when about half a dozen Gears manage to go missing every day?

Not to mention combining the often nausea-inducing effects of intense VR with notoriously stomach-roiling thrill rides means Six Flags' janitorial staffs should start angling for a raise as soon as possible. They are in my thoughts.
