'Mind Merge' injects familiar club forms with intriguing sonic malfunctions.

Detroit techno trailblazer Juan Atkins and Dutch veteran Orlando Voorn, a.k.a. Frequency, today shared a full stream of their debut collaborative LP Mind Merge. The record combines tropes from techno, electro, and funk with inhuman sound design and sci-fi atmospherics, and although it doesn't necessarily shatter expectations, it's remarkable for its clarity of vision. Assembled from a palate as antiseptically clean as the inside of a brand new hard drive, Mind Merge is most striking for the seeming malfunctions caused by wayward gusts of noise.
Voorn told THUMP about his experience making album over email, in a short-but-sweet fashion. "It has been a pleasure to work with Juan on this important project, from our minds to yours we bring you the merge of true souls," he said.
The duo first collaborated back in 1992 as Frequency vs. Atkins on a single for Amsterdam's Lower East Side records. Last year they reconvened to contribute a track to a five-year anniversary compilation for Italy's Out Electronic Recordings imprint, which is also the label releasing Mind Merge.
The album will be out tomorrow and is available for preorder on Bandcamp.
