Viral Style: Levitating Sound Systems, 'Parasite' Accessories, And The World's Smartest Motorcycle Helmet

Scouring dashboards across the URL world to bring you a selection of fashion tidbits in digestible weekly portions.

A weekly roundup of what's happening at the intersection of tech and fashion.

PARASITIC ENERGY ACCESSORIES OF THE WEEK

Science fiction, meet science fashion: as part of her graduate collection for Jerusalem’s Hadassah College, industrial designer Naomi Kizhner has created a range of accessories capable of harvesting energy directly from the wearer’s body. Entitled Energy Addicts, this three-piece collection was made in response to a potential future wherein resources are depleted, and humans are forced to seek alternative ways of harnessing energy. Metal and acrylic designs are applied directly to the surface of the skin, from a ‘blinker’ worn on the bridge of the nose (generating electricity from every blink) and a ‘blood bridge’ for the forearm, to an e-pulse conductor that cultivates the pulse (sent from a neurological system on the wearer’s back). Elegant as the designs are, there’s something slightly unsettling about the idea of the body being a big, organic battery.

HIGH-FASHION WEARABLE TECH OF THE WEEK

As more designers get wise to the appeal of the technology, Michael Bastian has become the latest brand to get into the wearables game. As part of a partnership with tech giants HP, the American label has developed a men's luxury smart watch capable of providing text, email and social media notifications, and along with weather, sport and stock updates. It’s button control rather than touch-screen, but with a design that takes its aesthetic influences from automobiles— complete with a 44mm stainless steel case and three interchangeable bands to suit your mood— if you fancy getting your wrist in one, The Bastian is set to launch this autumn on Gilt.

DESIGNER STYLE GIFS OF THE WEEK

Bringing a heap of catwalk, editorial and street style images to life, Greta Larkins’ Tumblr page Fash GIF has gone viral. Created on Photoshop, these fun, moving style shots bring a lighthearted dimension to the oh-so-serious world of fashion, from remixed Anya Hindmarch stripe clutches to multicolored floral Giles lookbooks and iron-on Christopher Kane jeans. Seriously though, Comme des Garçons x Fruit Ninja? That’s a collaboration we'd like to see happen IRL.

SARTORIAL APP OF THE WEEK

Here’s another one for the guys— French fashion house Hermès has launched a new app called Tie Break, which helps users choose the best tie for any occasion. Alongside sartorial tutorials, users can check out the label’s F/W14 neckwear collection, play games, watch GIFs, and dive into the label's production techniques. And if that's not enough fun already, check out Hermès’ Silk Knots app too, which is themed around— you guessed it— showing users how to perfect wearing the brand’s trademark scarves.

SMART SPEED TECH OF THE WEEK

I need this in my life so bad it (almost) hurts. Alongside a team of industrial designers and audio engineers, Californian brand OM Audio have developed the world’s very first levitating Bluetooth speaker. Breaking the mold in consumer sound technology, magnets embedded into the OM/ONE base keep the spherical speaker hovering in mid-air. And it's not just for the looks— the floating design reduces the waste of amplification energy, meaning you’ll be enjoying ultra-clear sounds up to 110 decibels. It's also Bluetooth capable, and you can even put two OM/ONEs together to curate the perfect stereo sound.

MUST_HAVE ACCESSORY OF THE WEEK

Whether you’re a real-life speed freak or just wish you were, check out the Skully AR-1. Branded 'the world’s smartest motorcycle helmet,’ and designed with the aim of eliminating distractions, the accessory comes equipped with a heads-up display that shows info on speed and fuel levels, and a rear-view camera. It can connect to your smartphone via Bluetooth, can access the Internet, take calls, play music and give you directions. Seriously. While the project still has a month to raise funds on Indiegogo, it's a go: backing for the Skully AR-1 has already hit $1,100,000, 443% more than its original fundraising goal.
