I Spent New Year's Eve Partying on a Remote Tropical Island

The Indonesian island of Derawan is home to more than 800 species of fish, but only 1,259 people. Turns out they all know how to throw a party.

I went to the island of Derawan, in East Kalimantan, to get away from it all and start the new year in quiet solitude. I was expecting a simple celebration with a few fishermen prepping some fresh fish and local women cooking for the next day's breakfast.

I was so wrong.

There was no DJ, but a few mix tapes, a bit of Adele's "Hello" and Magic!'s "Rude" mixed with dangdut and always aggressive funkot, drew a crowd of fishermen and local youths to the beach. In no time, the island's fishermen were raising cans of Bintang and shooting off fireworks as we all counted down to midnight.

The celebrations had to stop shortly after midnight (local curfews and all), but it was still a hell of a party.
