DJ Haus is a central figure in cutting edge UK contemporary dance music. The Hot Haus Recs and Unknown to the Unknown boss lives for the sound: from radio shows on Rinse, to playing sweaty sets all over Europe and releasing massive tracks by the likes of Willie Burns, Rushmore, Murlo, DJ Stingray and Slackk. When he's not doing that, Haus produces records of his own and together with DJ Q as one half of Trumpet & Badman.THUMP was lucky enough to have a quick chat with DJ Haus before we premiered his brand new video for the upcoming Coming On 12".THUMP: Can you tell us a little about the ethos behind Hot Haus? Does this differ from how you approach Unknown to the Unknown?
DJ Haus: There's actually no difference at all really. The art and the artists cross over the labels quite a bit, it's just another fun way to get the music out there and considering the volume of releases it's nice to have two channels of communication so nothing gets lost. I'm actually in the process of setting up another label with Juno records, called HOT SHIT RECS IN EFFEKT so look out for the first release dropping in January too.How important is the visual aesthetic to your projects?
I dunno, at first I would just rip Tumblr images for the artwork but as the label has grown I've had the opportunity to work with some proper designers and each release has come out looking as well as they sound. I don't think I could do white labels labels really given the amount of money that goes into pressing vinyl when you know an extra £100 gets you a tasty looking record.How do you go about selecting directors to work with on videos?
Most people just get in touch and a lot of the time they are doing videos very similar to what I'm doing anyway so it's a nice fit. I like the really bad iMovie shit, just really fun stuff inspired by the music. Hurfyd & 00UKFUNKY00 are THE BEST!What's the BEST house video ever?
This is pretty good:Where's UK house headed? Do you even think of the stuff you play on Rinse or out in clubland as strictly house?
Yeah, I think it all falls under the house music umbrella.
