Go See Nitehawk's Screening of 'Mad Max' Tonight

George Miller’s Mad Max is one of the most successful examples of genres being crossbred to make a completely new and ferocious kind of film. Come watch it tonight at Nitehawk Cinemas in Brooklyn, New York.

George Miller’s Mad Max is one of the most successful examples of genres being crossbred to make a completely new and ferocious kind of film. In the 1979 classic, the big skies, open roads, and murderous sociopaths from the biker movies are pit against an equally ruthless and lethal police force. The story takes a classic American Western character arc and sets it in a futuristic society on the brink of collapse. We're thrust into the film through its hard transitions, framing, and explosive comic book colors. The incredible opening sequence drops us into the chaos of a multi-vehicle chase featuring stunts and peerless editing. As the escaped lunatic the Nightrider out maneuvers his “bronze” pursuers, we’re visually introduced to the enigmatic Max Rockatansky—the Main Force Patrol's final defense. One deadly game of chicken later and the Nightrider goes from homicidal maniac on the loose to martyr for the gang of “scoot jockeys” who descend upon the region in great numbers to collect his body. So begins the journey through the decaying landscape where ambiguous morality and bursts of ultra violence penetrate Max’s world and take his family, pushing him to his breaking point. With the iconic V8 Interceptor as his steed, Max sets out into the wasteland with a relentless and detached focus worthy of a fuel injected samurai. He blazes a path of vengeance until the last man who wronged him is erased. Some see this film as social commentary and others just see it as a watershed action film, but all would agree it’s one of the most kinetic displays of filmmaking ever put together.

See the film at midnight, tonight at Nitehawk Cinemas in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. This screening is part of Nitehawk's LIVE + SOUND + CINEMA, which is presented in partnership with Noisey—VICE's music site. Soundtrack band Morricone Youth will be in the house to play a new live score to the classic film. To purchase tickets and get more information, visit Nitehawk's website.
