Wonderfully, Mariah Carey Will Do Times Square NYE Again This Year

After a masterpiece of a malfunction during last year's televised set, Carey will return to 'Dick Clark's Rockin' Eve with Ryan Seacrest' for a do-over.

Last New Year’s Day, we awoke to the promise of a grim and brutal year. But we also woke up to this video of Mariah Carey performing at New Year's Rockin' Eve in Times Square, a glorious nightmare that involved a broken earpiece, a botched backing track, some brilliant real-time commentary from Carey herself, and a “fuck you” smile for the ages. In the days that followed, Carey and Rockin’ Eve’s people went back and forth in the press, accusing each other of sabotage and stupidity. Carey said that the stage managers screwed up; her rep said that production had “set her up to fail”; someone involved with the production itself claimed that Carey had sent her body double out to soundcheck, rather than testing things out herself.

The situation didn’t really sort itself out until last night, when Dick Clark Productions and Mariah Carey confirmed that we’re getting a do-over this year:

"We can all agree that last year didn't go exactly as planned and we are thrilled to move forward together to provide America with an incredible night of music and celebration on Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve with Ryan Seacrest 2018. See you in Times Square!"

Carey seems up for it.

Camila Cabello, Nick Jonas and Sugarland will also perform this year, and Britney Spears will be beamed in via satellite from her show in Las Vegas.
