Traffic Jams: Central Class

Capturing the sounds of the city's glittering skyscrapers and old-money neighborhoods.

Central Jakarta is the heart of the city. I mean, of course, it's where all the tall buildings are, but it's more than just the shiny skyscrapers and fancy rooftop bars. The capital's center is full of charm. It's got the historic (and palatial) homes of Menteng. The chilled cafe scene of Cikini. The grime of Jalan Jaksa. And the well-aged antiques and classic records of Jalan Surabaya.

We asked Shun (DJ Dr. Satomata) to make a mix that captured the feel of Central Jakarta. A Japanese national who left it all behind to open Mondo By The Rooftop in Fatmawati, is a graphic designer with a serious love of classic music. So we thought he was perfect for the city's classiest district.

This mix is more mature than our South Jakarta mixtape. It's got some nice jazz and bossa nova in it, as well as some flamenco guitar and great instrumental jams. It's the perfect soundtrack for a weekend pool-side chill session in Cikini or a stroll down some of the district's leafy streets.
