Resisting Peer Pressure
Parliament has cleared the Brexit bill, paving the way for the government to trigger Article 50 so the UK can leave the European Union. Peers backed down over the issues of EU residency rights and a meaningful vote on the final Brexit deal after their objections were overturned by MPs. – BBC

Referendum II: Referendum Harder
Nicola Sturgeon has announced that Scotland will seek a second referendum on independence, after Westminster thwarted efforts for Scotland to receive a "bespoke Scottish Brexit". The new referendum, which will take place once the details and consequences of Brexit are made clear, is expected to be held between autumn of 2018 and spring of 2019. – Scotland Herald

Well Past its Due Date
MPs have won the right to introduce a bill to Parliament which would decriminalise abortion for the first time, by repealing a law that dates back to Victorian times. The bill was introduced by MP Diana Johnson, who argued that the law was unfair and inappropriate in an age when women can access abortion pills by post. – Guardian

The NHS is at breaking point, according to a new report, with enforced rationing and over-stretching of services leaving patients in pain and distress. The King's Fund said that a combination of financial strain, staff shortages and unprecedented demand has led to shortfalls in care across a number of areas. – Independent

Worst Humanitarian Crisis in Over 70 Years
More than 20 million people are at risk of starvation and disease, according to the United Nations. Somalia, Yemen, South Sudan and northeast Nigeria are facing a crippling humanitarian crisis, and are in desperate need of aid. It has been described as the largest humanitarian crisis since 1945. – CNN

Oh, Bummer Care
The new Republican bill to replace Obamacare will leave 24 million people without health insurance, according to a nonpartisan report. The numbers will make it much harder for Republicans to explain why their legislation would improve the country's healthcare system. – New York Times

North Korea has warned the United States of "merciless attacks" if an aircraft carrier strike group led by the USS Carl Vinson, which is joining South Korean forces for exercises, infringes on North Korea's sovereignty or dignity. – Reuters

The row between Turkey and the Netherlands has ratcheted up, with Turkey announcing retaliatory measures for a Dutch decision to block its ministers from campaigning for a referendum. The latest move has seen Turkey bar the Dutch ambassador from returning to Ankara. – BBC
