Andrei Tarkovsky is one of the giants of Russian cinema, famous for films like the sci-fi drama Solaris and his 1979 sci-fi classic Stalker, which is about a guy called “the Stalker” who guides people to a somewhere called “the Zone,” a mysterious unearthly place which grants people their innermost desires.It sounds like a great way to spend an afternoon, and as well as being a classic movie, it’s also the inspiration for a new project by Peter Burr, who runs Cartune Xprez, a “video label/roadshow/cartoon gang.” This new project will take form in an event called Special Effect, which will showcase new animations from the likes of Yoshi Sodeoka, Andrew Benson, Amy Lockhart, Ola Vasiljeva, and 15 others.They’ve been commissioned to explore “the Zone” of Tarkovsky’s Stalker by each making a 30 second animated video piece inspired by it , which will be shown at the event in November at the Museum of the Moving Image in New York. The works will become a 90 minute live performance which will include “hand-knit costumes, a hacked kinect camera, laser beams, and interactive cartoons.”They’re asking people to help raise the $10,000 needed to get the project off the ground, so if you fancy helping out you can go donate over at their Kickstarter page.@stewart23rd
