Inside the demolition of France's Calais refugee “jungle”

Child refugees were left to fend for themselves.

This segment originally aired Oct. 27, 2016, on VICE News Tonight on HBO.

Hundreds of refugee children with no parents or guardians were literally left out in the cold by the French government’s demolition of the notorious refugee camp in Calais known as “the jungle.”

“I think the jungle is the most dangerous it’s ever been for children.” Save the Children’s Dorothy Sang told VICE News correspondent Ben Ferguson “To leave hundreds of children without anywhere to stay is just completely unacceptable.”

Thousands of refugees have been moved from the Calais refugee camp and resettled around France, but not all of the camp’s children were able to register for resettlement.

For decades, refugees have traveled to Calais because it’s close to the country they want to make home: the United Kingdom. The U.K. claims it’s committed to the welfare of unaccompanied children, but U.K. Prime Minister Theresa May recently rejected France’s call to take 1,500 child refugees.
