Tasmania Police believe that body parts may have been disposed in wheelie bins throughout the city of Launceston. This comes after a man’s torso was discovered on Sunday night in an area of bushland just off the Tasman Highway near the Myrtle Park camping ground. Police confirmed that “the body is not intact,” and it is understood that parts of the limbs were missing.

The torso is thought to be that of 24-year-old Jake Anderson-Brettner, who was reported missing on Thursday.

According to the ABC, police were spotted rifling through roadside bins yesterday in search of the human remains, while Emergency Services workers and forensic crime scene examiners spent the afternoon searching the Remount Road garbage tip. The search at the tip will continue today.

While Northern District Commander Brett Smith refused to specify the details of what police found in the bush—saying “I don’t want to go right into it because it’s terrible”—a firearm and an electric saw have been recovered. It is understood that Mr Anderson-Brettner was shot.

The 24-year-old was last seen driving his black Nissan Navara ute through Launceston on Wednesday night. That vehicle was discovered unattended in the suburb of Riverside the next day, and police took a Riverside couple, aged 25 and 26, into custody on Saturday night. No charges have yet been laid.

“Ultimately this is a murder investigation,” Commander Brett Smith declared yesterday. “We will be undertaking a number of searches in and around Launceston and out at Myrtle Park.”

“The circumstances under which Mr Anderson-Brettner were discovered are particularly unpleasant,” he added. “But our community can be reassured…[they] are not common, [they are] quite unusual, and certainly not reflective of what goes on in our community.”

Police are encouraging anyone who may have information to come forward.
