Ready to jack?

"Jack" is an ancient trope in dance music history—one that is almost as old as house music itself. Originally, it referred to the herky-jerky dance moves inspired by Chicago house's staccato rhythms and crisp hi-hats, but "jacking house" is no longer a general descriptor that could apply to any beat equipped with percussive force.

These days, it refers to a specific style of house production that harnesses grime-flavored mega bass, vocals stripped from R&B and hip-hop records, and the arid swing of 2-step and garage rhythms. Birmingham-based DJ Hannah Wants has produced several hits in the UK jackin' house scene and released an impressive ongoing mixtape series devoted to the sub-genre.

Tempted by her growing collection of mixes, we asked Hannah Wants to put together a set for THUMP; her offering is a fast-paced sprint through energetic low end, strangled diva wails, and, of course, an onslaught of crispy hi-hats.
