Greetings from Motherboard's Newest Comrade

First time editor, long time reader.

Hello, internet!

My name is Nicholas Deleon and I'm Motherboard's new shortform editor, focusing on hard tech, tech news, and getting faster coverage on Motherboard's core topics to help get you more of what you need. Monday was my first full day here, and while I'm still getting used to some things behind the scenes I'm very excited to fully get started this week.

As an old school Simpsons fan, I'm obligated to quote Troy McClure and say something like, "Some of you may remember me from such popular publications as TechCrunch, The Daily, and Circa." And while those are (or were, unfortunately) really great places, for quite some time now I've been blown away by the stories that the Motherboard team has been putting out.

You don't even have to look very far to see the excellent work, from this week's story by Jason Koebler as part of Motherboard's Modern Medicine week to Lorenzo Franceschi-Bicchierai's work last week trying to make sense of the Hacking Team debacle. (Be sure to take time this week to read about a man who was forced to turn to the dark net to buy an inhaler for his wife.) There's a lot of very good folks here at Motherboard and I look forward to working with them in the coming days and weeks.

So what am I going to be doing here? We're in the process of developing Motherboard's take on short form content, which I'm leading, with the aim of making the site's coverage more responsive while leaving fewer key stories on the cutting room floor. (I truly believe that Circa, where I was lead technology editor for the past few years, helped pioneer the modern notion of short form content.) The goal is a very Motherboardy one: to cut through clutter to pull out what you need to know and things you never knew existed but are glad you do. Basically I'm trying to DJ the news.

I'll be on the lookout for tech news that's relevant to Motherboard readers, such as the sad passing of Nintendo's Satoru Iwata, and will look to bring a little more attention 'round these parts to the tentpole events that much of the technology industry revolves around, such as Apple's WWDC, E3, Google's I/O, and CES, the big consumer electronics trade show in Las Vegas that technology reporters and editors love to hate. (I don't mind it!)

The team here has already done some work on the concept, but I hope to speed up its development in a manner that's consistent with the high standards that have already been set by the good folks here.

I'm not too hard to find if you'd like to say hi or talk about whatever. I'm on Twitter @nicholasadeleon, and can be reached by email at nicholas dot deleon at vice dot com. My dog has an Instagram account if you're into that sort of thing.

Onward!
