"Team Meeting, My Ass": Stan Van Gundy Rips Players After Blowout Loss to Bulls

Stan Van Gundy doesn't believe in the players-only meeting.

Detroit Pistons coach Stan Van Gundy has already blessed the basketball world with several legendary tirades during his career. His comments following Monday night's 113-82 beating at the hands of the Chicago Bulls has to rank up there with his finest work, if only due to his magnificent dismissal of one of the most overhyped phenomena in sports: the players-only meeting.

Van Gundy dismissed the notion that the team's performance was particularly disappointing in the first game after that team meeting following Saturday's loss to Indiana:

"Team meeting, my ass," Van Gundy said. "Like I said before, that stuff means nothing. It's what you do on the court. Talking's easy."

There you have it, folks: Team meetings don't mean jack shit unless the team changes its execution on the court.

But the coach wasn't finished. After calling the game a "disgusting performance" for all involved, he also ripped his team's effort against a Bulls team that had been reeling coming into Monday night:

"It looks to me like a lack of effort and a lack of heart," Van Gundy said. "And if you don't play hard, you're not going to have any confidence, things aren't going to go [your way]. We looked like we were hoping the game would be easy tonight, and it wasn't and we just caved."

As for Detroit's starting five…well, they shouldn't get too comfortable:

"I guarantee you, on Wednesday night we're not trotting that five out there again."

Nothing will ever beat the "Dwight Howard wants me fired" interview, but Monday's rant should at least rank in Van Gundy's top 5.
