Marshawn Lynch Is Reportedly Planning to Retire This Year

It's happened twice before, though.

Teammates still attempting to change his mind, but Seahawks' RB Marshawn Lynch has told some close to him he plans to retire, per sources.

ESPN's Adam Schefter seems to have the scoop on all things NFL, and now he's reporting that Seattle Seahawk Marshawn Lynch is on the verge of retirement, according to sources.

But have faith, loyal Lynch fans: the running back has a track record of announcing his retirement and pulling back. Two years ago, he said he'd leave the game if the Seahawks won the Super Bowl. Well, they won, and it still didn't happen. Then, a year ago, NFL network reporter Ian Rapoport asked sources if he'd retire then, to which they responded, "he could." But yet he was still around this season.

Lynch's retirement rumors come in the wake of Calvin Johnson's contemplation of leaving the league at 30, which have drawn criticism from Barry Sanders as a "devastating" move for the young player. While Lynch, 29, is younger, he has allegedly saved upwards of $50 million (if he indeed hasn't spent a dime of his earnings), after living a fairly modest lifestyle, donating his time and money to charities in his hometown Oakland.

It wouldn't be surprising if the media-adverse Lynch is toying with expectations yet again, and the rumors are simply all talk. But it would be just as unsurprising to find out that Lynch finally wants to get away from it all. Either way, I imagine a pool full of Skittles is in the works.

Update: Marshawn went on Twitter a few minutes ago and made it all but official:
