New Media Artists Confront the State of Youth Culture in Korea

The digital generation at the intersection of art and technology is the focus of the new show from Seoul's PKM gallery.

Korean youth fashion, art and technology goes under the microscope at Stream, Streaming Persona, the new show at PKM gallery in Seoul. The artwork in the show explores "this simultaneous on and offline curation of self in the forms of painting, sculpture, film, and digital installations," according to the press release, which opens with a discussion about the power of social media to compel the current generation to build and develop a persona on a daily basis; a persona that is incessantly being altered and edited in the digital age.

The show, which opens today, features paintings from Young-do Jeong, a piece by Wonwoo Lee, and an LED sculpture titled, 32 x 32 x Z, from New York-based artist studio Maxrelax. In addition to these artworks, the exhibition at the PKA gallery will show Like Me Now, a multiscreen short film produced by Maxrelax in collaboration with Korean fashion brand, Kathleen Kye. The short film examines "the theme of irreverence through the different perspectives of five kids as they explore Seoul."

The collaborating artists have launched a website for the show that documents a behind-the-scenes look at how the show was put together. Check out some of the works in the show below, and visit the online experience here.
