OHL's Kingston Frontenacs to Honour Tragically Hip with Kick-Ass Jerseys

Kingston, Ontario's most popular hockey team will be honouring the city's most famous band with commemorative jerseys to be worn for Tragically Hip night on Jan. 28, 2017.

In honour of The Hip's roots in Kingston and in light of lead singer Gord Downie's terminal cancer diagnosis announced last year, the Ontario Hockey League club will be wearing the special sweaters during a tilt against the Mississauga Steelheads and subsequently auctioning them off after the game, with all proceeds going to support the Gord Downie Fund for Brain Cancer Research through Sunnybrook Hospital.

"Gord's diagnosis touched our entire organization and everyone we spoke with, from hockey fans to music fans, across Kingston, and Canada," said Justin Chenier, team director of business operations with the Frontenacs.

"As a team, we've talked about honouring The Tragically Hip and when the reality of Gord's diagnosis set in, we knew we could to do something special to honour the band and help raise funds to help with the research for brain cancer."

Adding some awesome detail to the jerseys, the backgrounds of each one will feature the name of every album and song recorded and released by the band, the team said.

The Tragically Hip, known to most Canadians as simply The Hip, completed their final tour last summer, finishing it out in at the K-Rock Centre in their hometown in August. Most shows were sold out in minutes after they announced their final tour, giving Canadian music fans the chance to celebrate the life of Gord Downie—one of the most influential and talented musicians this country has ever produced.

According to the Frontenacs, the game-worn jerseys honouring The Tragically Hip will be auctioned online, with full details on the auction site to be released the week prior to the game.
