M.I.A Is Not Messing About with Her Meltdown Festival Bookings

The lineup so far includes Crystal Castles, Yung Lean, Young Fathers, and of course, M.I.A.

Last month it was announced that M.I.A would be the big name taking on curatorial duties for this year's Meltdown Festival, an annual set of special concerts that takes place at London's Southbank Centre. This year's event will take place between 9 and 18 June, and the first performers – all selected by M.I.A  – have been revealed.

Among the batch of artists are rappers Yung Lean, Young MA, Tommy Genesis and Afrikan Boy. They're joined by Mykki Blanco and JD Samson of Le Tigre, who'll perform a joint headline show, Young Fathers, who have created a show especially for the event, and MIA herself will close the festival on its final night. Crystal Castles, I Wayne, Dexta Daps, MHD and Mr Eazi are also billed to play. Whew.

These are selections that seem to speak to M.I.A's wide range of musical interests and influences – everything from rap to dancehall is represented, and it's also worth noting that most of the artists are also people of colour, which reflects her desire to present audiences with "a melting pot." No word yet on whether Radiohead are going to respond to her tweet asking them to play, but a girl can dream.
