Gabby Giffords is just warming up in her fight against gun violence

Giffords survived a shooting to emerge as a leader in the movement for commonsense gun legislation. What the world doesn't know is how hard she's had to work to get there and how hard she's willing to work to stay.

The world knows Gabby Giffords as the former Arizona congresswoman who survived a shooting to emerge as a leader in the movement for commonsense gun legislation. What the world doesn't know is the sheer amount of work Giffords has to put in behind the scenes every single day to continue her work.

Giffords was shot in the head at close range during a 2011 constituent meeting in a supermarket parking lot. Miraculously, she survived the attack, but she suffered critical injuries. Ever since, she and her husband, retired astronaut Captain Mark Kelly, have dedicated their lives to ending gun violence.

"This isn't about responsible gun ownership; this is about the irresponsible people out there," Kelly explained to VICE News, pointing out that both he and Giffords are gun owners. "The gun lobby says these reforms are an infringement on your rights. They're not. Nobody's trying to take away anybody's Second Amendment right, if you're a responsible person."

But Gabby and Mark's push for commonsense gun legislation can be mentally and physically taxing. And for Gabby, it's all the more grueling because of the unique challenges posed by her injury. But that's not stopping her from charging ahead, with both her recovery and her cause.
