When it comes to ambitious, whiskey-soaked turn-of-the-century novelists, there are plenty of worse scribblers to emulate than Herman Melville, a fact that German melodic doom lushes Ahab figured out a solid decade ago. They've stayed true blue to their nautical theme (though the Melville fascination seemed to run its course) since they paddled into the international waters in 2004.

The overaching idea buoying their maudlin output seems to be that life is pain, water is everywhere, and someday, it will drown us all. Pretty standard, really.
