Hear Lucero Howl on a Song from Their New Album, ‘All a Man Should Do’

The beloved alt-country sons of Memphis deliver again. Listen to "Can't You Hear Them Howl."

Ask ten different Lucero fans what their favorite song is and you’ll probably get ten different answers. The Memphis alt-country heroes have enough variety in their extensive 100-plus-song catalog to cover all of your music needs. “Each person makes Lucero their own thing. And each person identifies with us for completely different reasons,” frontman Ben Nichols told me last year, right after the release of the band’s live record Live from Atlanta. “For one reason or another, Lucero becomes a very personal band.”

And there are a lot of weapons in Lucero’s arsenal to get personal with. First, you’ve got their drunken sad bastard acoustic ballads, then there’s their fast-paced down South punk jams, and of course, their classic big band pop songs. And yet, they all manage to be about some combination of women and whiskey. Their new song, “Can’t You Hear Them Howl” from their forthcoming album All a Man Should Do leans towards that big band side of Lucero, relying heavily on their backing horns and, as always, Ben Nichols’ trademark raspy Southern drawl.

There are plenty of the other sides to Lucero on All a Man Should Do, too. Hell, there’s even a cover—Big Star’s “I Fell in Love with a Girl.” At their heart, though, Lucero are just suckers for the classics.

“I think the main influence when it comes down to it, the songs at their core, are heavily influenced by classic rock,” Nichols said before he started laughing. “So, basically, we’re a wannabe classic rock band.”
