Insult to Injury: Week Ending 4/18

Here's what the bros and basic bitches of Noisey were listening to this week.

Welcome to Insult to Injury, the place where the Noisey editors gather weekly to dump a whole bunch of music and talk about life's four essential Bs: Blunts, Butts, Bros, and Basic bitches. Here's what we've all been listening to.

DJ Q feat. Kai Ryder - "Be Mine"

For those paying attention, DJ Q has been doing important work in the UK club scene for over a decade now. With his newest record

Ineffable

, he's making huge strides in reclaiming British dance music from fresh-faced neophytes like Disclosure and their army of clones, offering up slick tunes that synthesize grime, two-step garage, and UK Funky into something with a foot in the club and a foot in the streets of 2056.

TL;DR: Disclosure kinda sucks, listen to this instead.

Violens - "Something Falling"

Guys! I'm back. I know you didn't miss me. Thank you to Dan and Fred for pretending to be me for the past two weeks. You guys did a great job of representing the indie-schmindie wuss in me (Tennis) and the RAGE THAT BURNS IN MY DARK DARK SOUL (Godflesh). Thanks also for calling attention to the fact that I have all the grace of a drunk elephant. FYI Dan—this week I walked into a bed and injured my leg. Also this week: I've only been listening to mixtapes my friends have made me. This makes me happy because I thought mixtape-making was a dead art. NOT TRUE. One of the standout tunes from one collection is this old cut by Violens. I'm coming down from all that Coachella silliness and this is the sonic equivalent of floating away into the sunset on a white fluffy cloud.

Taking Back Sunday - "Great Romances of the 20th Century

This week has been about one thing for me: youth. After , I spent most of the week thinking about my teenage years—the girls I Loved, the emotions I Felt, and the many other challenges of being a Sensitive Guy in small town in Middle America during the early aughts. The truth is, my life at that time was pretty fucking great, and me as a white middle class dude complaining about anything during high school is a lot of bullshit. But, whatever. Fuck it. That doesn't matter, because this week reminded me that I just love the shit out of Taking Back Sunday. I love the shit about the way it made me feel. I love the shit out of the way it still makes me feel. I will never apologize. You shouldn't either. Life is about living. Live the way you want. Be the change you want to see in the world. Use the cliches you want to use. Music is subjective. If you wanna turn the fuck up while listening to Adam Lazzara scream about how September never stays this cold, then you turn the fuck up and listen to Adam Lazzara scream about how September never stays this cold. Never take this lying down.
