Head Wound City Share the Video for "Scraper," Remain the Superest Supergroup

The latest from a side project by members of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, The Locust, and The Blood Brothers.

The lifespan of a supergroup is often short, dependent as it is on tour schedules and big personalities. That can a pain, too, because once in a while—rare as it may be—a bunch of good musicians get together and create something greater than the sum of their parts. Head Wound City were one such supergroup, comprised of Blood Brothers’ genuinely inimitable Jordan Billie and Cody Votolato, Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ Nick Zinner, and Justin Pearson and Gabe Serbian of The Locust. Their claustrophobic debut EP, released a full 11 years ago, was as frantic as anything The Blood Brothers unleashed in their career, controlled by Zinner, and beaten back again by The Locust’s psychotic tendencies.

Ten minutes. That was it. That EP was ten minutes. They got together for a few shows a couple years back, but all we had to go on was ten minutes for eleven years.

Until today, when Head Wound City announced a US tour with Savages, dropped a new track and confirmed details of their new LP, A New Wave of Violence, coming out on VICE Records on May 13. "Scraper," now officially one sixth of the band’s entire recorded back catalog, is a beast, too. It chugs and sputters through its first minute before steaming off and cutting loose. Ross Robinson, who sat behind the desk on The Blood Brothers’ seminal 2002 LP, …Burn, Piano Island, Burn, opens things up on production too, filling the mix out. And goddamn if Jordan Billie’s voice isn’t still just frightening. Constantly, naturally frightening.

Watch "Scraper," the grave-diggingest video we’ve seen in some time, below. And it should go without saying that it’s worth seeing them open for Savages.
