Watch Astral Skulls' Friendly Retort to Courtney Barnett’s ‘Depreston'

The solo shredder/synther has produced "Impreston", an ode to multiculturalism and jam donuts.

The market, multicultural diversity, cheaper rent, and amazing jam donuts, there’s a lot to like about Preston, the inner-suburb nine kilometres north of the Melbourne central business district.

Brisbane transplant Kurt Eckardt aka Astral Skulls has only been living in Preston for six months but says he finds it a happy medium and scratches his head at the prices some pay to live closer to the city.

He has produced "Impreston", a musical and visual ode to the suburb.

The video is also a fun retort to Courtney Barnett’s “Depreston”, a somber song about moving further away from the inner city action. With lines such as, "the CBD is a quick bike ride/spend half as much on rent", "Inpreston" is a fun and clever celebration of life in the 3072.

Noisey: What do you think of Courtney's song?
Kurt Eckardt: I'm a fan of Courtney Barnett, and “Depreston” is a great song. The lyrics are pretty spot on for people our age who are moving further out of the city. But I still got a little defensive of Preston when I heard it, so I thought I'd make a song and clip about some of the good things it has to offer. Don't get me wrong, some aspects of Preston are depressing, so I get why it has that reputation, but it's a pretty great place overall.

Also, most of the dodginess is kind of funny, not scary. Last week in my local supermarket, a guy ran was being out after he'd stolen two shopping baskets overflowing with Ferrero Rochers and tins of Spam. That's it, just heaps of it! Across the car park, he flung one basket full at his pursuers and made off with the rest. You know, typical suburban charm.

What's the best food in Preston?
The jam donuts at Preston Markets are the best. As in, the best I've ever had. And they're 6 for $4.80 or something. There are heaps of dumpling and noodle houses, too .One Noodle Friendship is apparently the greatest, but I don't know if everyone's experience is influenced by the awesome name.

What's the best thing about the market?
Apart from the donuts? There’s a clothing stall that sells some seriously good copies of Starter and NBA jackets and hats and stuff - you can get legit looking MLB, NBA or NFL clothes there for super cheap!

And the worst thing about living in Preston?
There's this car that honks when it goes past my house everyday - or maybe it's more than one car? On purpose though, you know - like it's Morse code, or they're trying to play a song? That kind of shits me. Apart from that, Preston rules.
