Style Rider: Hinds Needs Red Lipstick and New Underwear

“Underwear is like music, you always want more and new.”

Photo courtesy of Hinds You could say the girls behind Hinds were born to play rock n’ roll. Aside from being wildly talented and possessing the kind of infectious enthusiasm that makes every single person in the audience thrash about, they also have hair hat deserves both a stage and an excuse to headbang. (Sorry Haim, consider yourself dethroned.)

The Madrid-based four-piece hasn’t even released an EP yet, and they’ve already made fans out of everyone from The Vaccines to Mac DeMarco…to Mac DeMarco’s mother, . (They’ve also made enemies; back in January, the girls had to ditch their original band name, Deers, due to a legal spat.) But despite only having a few singles to their name, the attention is more than deserved. Actually, they probably deserve way more of it given just how outstanding their lo-fi garage rock is, and as good as their demos are (very, very good), Hinds’ live performance is even better. On stage, they light up and jam out, all top ponys and red lips and band tees.

The girls are gearing up for a bunch of festivals this summer, so we stole a minute with 23-year-old frontwomen Carlotta Cosials and Ana Perrote to find out what they’ll be bringing along on the road.

RED LIPSTICK + SPANISH (AND CHEAP) TOBACCO

“I think the tobacco doesn't need an explanation 'cause every country we travel to has more expensive tobacco than Spain (#olé!). And about the lipstick…we just dress as boys so it's our particular feminine touch. But it has a bad side. Because as we—Carlotta and Ana—sing so close to the mic, we sometimes (always) end our gigs as if we had been kissing someone for hours or had been eating pasta with tons of oil…”

NOTEBOOKS

“Touring is crazy and you get drunk every single night and we all know it, so it's always good to have a notebook to write down the important things you really don't want to forget—whether it’s a calendar (to remember in which day you're living), lyrics (to laugh at them when you read them sober again), or money issues (just to remind yourself how awful the change of euros to pounds is).”

MUSIC FOR THE VAN

“It doesn't matter how big is your CD case is. You will listen to the same albums again and again and again. And we still like them! But we have to admit that our tour manager is getting sick of us. The most listened: Room on Fire by The Strokes and 2 by Mac DeMarco.”

OUR LUCKY PLUG (OR WHATEVER YOU GUYS CALL THIS)

“It’s not only an amulet since the very beginning, it's also the best idea we've had. If you have this, you only need one transformer and then you can plug there your pedals as if you were home.”

THE MAXIMUM AMOUNT OF UNDERWEAR YOU HAVE. SERIOUSLY.

“Underwear is like music, you always want more and new.”
