Watch Old Man Gloom's Creepy New Video for "The Lash"

"Nate mentioned wanting to make a trilogy, and I told him that would involve dumping chocolate syrup all over them and he was into that."

Old Man Gloom are some of our favorite trolls (and the band's new record, The Ape of God, crushes, too). The sludgy supergroup recently posted a creepy, sci-fi-inspired new video for the track "The Lash," which we'd highly recommend you ruin your Sunday with. Director Andrew Cox gave us the lowdown:

"Up to this point the music videos I've directed have been pretty comedic (Torche, Helms Alee), so I have been itching to do something more serious. I guess it's a little ironic that it ended up being for Old Man Gloom who are known for their merry prankster shenanigans. The loose concept has been kicking around in my head for a couple years. It's got elements from a variety of influences: the opening of 2001: A Space Odyssey, a little bit of Star Wars, the melting face at the end of Raiders of the Lost Ark, Uncle Boonmee Who Could Recall His Past Lives, and a video art piece that my wife Akina Cox made called "Burning Witch" (unrelated to the band)."

He continued, "I fleshed the idea out by listening to the song on loop, to figure out what should happen when, storyboarded it, and sent an animatic to the band. They gave the go ahead, and I spent a few months forcing my little brother to drag a pile of wood through the desert, sculpting simian body parts, and having my mom stand by with a hose when we shot the fire scene. The band were great to work with mostly because they didn't ask for any changes when I sent them the rough cut. I also conned them into letting my band Andraus open their San Francisco show. Nate mentioned wanting to make a trilogy, and I told him that would involve dumping chocolate syrup all over them and he was into that. We'll see what happens."

Enjoy the freaky fruits of his labor below:
