Stream: Kool Keith & Brass (featuring Sinus) Late Night Jam ‘Swinger’s Party’

A sleazy jam recorded 12-years ago during an Australian tour harkens back to Kool Keith’s legendary Dr. Octagon era.

In 2003 legendary New York hip-hop performer Kool Keith was travelling the country on the 'Kool Keith vs. Australia' tour. After a night out on Sydney’s Oxford Street promoter Trent Slingshot and Keith grabbed some Chinese takeaway and swung by producer Fame’s Surry Hills home studio.

An impromptu writing and recording session resulted in Australian hip-hop veteran Brass and Keith going through a few of producer Lance Willson’s beats. By the time the boxes of Chow Mein and Beef Black Bean were done a track had been born.

With it’s sleazy lyrics and 70's strip club beats the track is an ode to Keith’s Dr Octagon and Sex Styles days and features the spacey guitar sounds of guitarist Simon Bartholomew of The Brand New Heavies.

We spoke to Brass about the session.

Noisey: What was Keith like to work with?
Brass: He was extremely relaxed and super relatable and easy to bounce off. We spent a night in the studio throwing back and forth ideas. He’s really open to collaborating and sharing thoughts. It was a purely positive experience.

What do you remember of the session?
Wow, it was like ten years ago but I remember a whole lot of laughs and positive momentum everyone sharing ideas and Sinus laying down some funny ass lyrics. It was good not taking it all too serious and just immersing ourselves in the experience of song writing.

The track is an ode to Keith’s Dr Octagon and Sex Styles. Do you have a favourite track or album from the Extraterrestrial Surgeon?
Dr Doom has been on my Top 5 playlist since its release. Even now that I have three kids, it still hasn’t left the player.

How did you get Simon Bartholomew of The Brand New Heavies involved on guitar?
Well Lance has done a whole lot of work with the Heavies, so I guess it was just a natural progression.
