Danny Dyer Is a Drag Queen in This Lucy Rose Video and It's Proper Emotional and Very British

"I've always believed that people should be who they wanna be, regardless of race or gender."

Danny Dyer is the peak form of many things: an East London that doesn't exist anymore, calling a loved one a tart and getting away with it by winking afterwards, punching a hole through a dry wall with your bare fist. Danny Dyer describes sleeping as "right naughty," terrorists as "slags," and Katie Hopkins as a tampon with a face. Danny Dyer can be seen, right this very moment, ripping off his hoodie on a grizzly day while wearing a pair of sunglasses for Sport Relief. Danny Dyer is the posterboy for an interpretation of masculinity so traditional and so British that when you find yourself in a local pub on a Sunday afternoon surrounded by older men eating pork scratchings and watching football by themselves, you think immediately and primarily of Danny Dyer—which is why his performance as a drag queen in Lucy Rose's new video for "Nebraska" is very important.

Directed by Christopher McGill and featuring cameos from Ghostpoet, Rae Morris, and Josef Salvat, "Nebraska" follows a man (Danny Dyer) struggling with his identity. I won't spoil it for you, because you have eyes, but it is genuinely very good. Normally the only time you see a typecast hardman deviating from the standard uniform of bootcut jeans and a dads 'n lads haircut is when they're dressed up as a nun on a stag do for "banter", but here is the beacon of all things apparently masculine – a bloody EastEnders pub landlord – giving an earnest and moving performance that challenges gender norms. I have seen the future and it is Danny Dyer in drag.

"I think most importantly we wanted to make some beautiful and emotive but also tell a story that life can be tough and it doesn't always go to plan and we all need our own form of escapism," Lucy told The Independent. "This video to me isn't about Danny being a drag queen but a freedom of expression and a form of escapism."

Dyer told The Independent: "I was honoured to be asked by the maestro that is Lucy Rose to be part of her video. When I got the treatment through I was overwhelmed. I think it's such a moving piece of work. I'm beyond proud to be part of it, I've always believed that people should be who they wanna be, regardless of race or gender. Freedom of expression is so important – I really hope that this video gets the recognition it deserves."
