US Jet Shoots Down Syrian Warplane
A US military jet shot down a Syrian government fighter plane after it bombed US-backed rebel forces near Raqqa. According to the Pentagon, the downing of the Syrian Air Force's SU-22 on Sunday was an act of "collective self-defense" in support of the Syrian Democratic Forces. The Syrian military called it an act of "flagrant aggression."—CNN

US Navy Sailors Found Dead After Collision
Seven US Navy sailors have died after the USS Fitzgerald and a container vessel slammed into each other off the coast of Japan on Saturday. The US Navy released the names of the sailors after their bodies were discovered in flooded compartments of the ship. Vice Admiral Joseph Aucoin said "heroic efforts" had prevented the flooding from spreading and the ship from sinking.—CBS News

Police Investigate Killing of Muslim Girl in Virginia
Police in Virginia have found what they believe to be the remains of a 17-year-old Muslim girl, and have charged a 22-year-old man with her murder. The victim, Nabra Hassanen, was in a group of four or five teenagers confronted by a driver early Sunday morning in Fairfax. The others escaped to the local mosque to report their friend was in danger. Police were not said to be investigating the incident as a potential hate crime.—The Washington Post

Firebrand Sheriff Turns Down DHS Job
Milwaukee County sheriff David Clarke, the controversial Trump advocate who has railed against Black Lives Matter, will not be taking up a position at the Department of Homeland Security after all. Clarke's adviser said he "had rescinded his acceptance of the agency's offer," after the sheriff's claim last month that he was joining as an assistant secretary.—AP

Iran Launches Missile Strikes on ISIS in Syria
Iran has fired missiles at ISIS targets in the Deir Az Zor Province of eastern Syria. The country's Revolutionary Guard said "a large number of terrorists were killed and weapons destroyed." Shortly before the strike, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei had warned Iran would "slap its enemies" in retaliation for the recent terrorist attacks in Tehran, in which 17 people were killed and for which ISIS claimed responsibility.—Al Jazeera

Macron's Party Wins Large Majority in France
President Emmanuel Macron's Republic on the Move (LREM) Party has won a hefty majority in the French parliament. With the final votes still being counted, pollsters have projected the centrist party to snag 355 to 365 seats in the 577-seat house. The election saw low turnout, estimated at around 42 percent.—Reuters

One Killed, Ten Wounded in Van Attack at London Mosque
One person was killed and ten others injured when a van drove into people near a London mosque just after midnight on Monday. A 48-year-old male suspect was arrested after being stopped at the scene, where one eyewitness said he stepped out of his van and said, "I want to kill all Muslims." UK prime minister Theresa May said the authorities were treating it as "a potential terrorist attack."—VICE News

Two Killed in Mali Resort Attack
At least two were killed when a tourist resort in Mali was attacked by gunmen Sunday. At least 30 people escaped during the attack at the Campement Kangaba resort.
